Growing Up on Sanibel features Debbie Jenks Sickels. This first of five Sanibel Island documentaries sponsored by Pfeifer Realty Group highlights four generations of people who grew up on Sanibel. The film will features some long–time Sanibel residents who either grew up here, or who moved here in their early adult years, and who raised families here. An additional focus to adults who grew up here takes a nostalgic look back at their experience growing up Sanibel Island. Finally, current “Sanibel kids” are featured, with glimpses into their island lives.

Debbie Sickels grew up on Sanibel in the 60s and 70s. Her grandparents introduced their family to the Island and they were told to get there fast and buy up some property after working with Priscilla Murphy the first real estate sales office on the island. They bought a property off of Donax, built a duplex and moved to the island right after the causeway was built. Debbie enjoyed the company of about 30 kids her own age and together they enjoyed boating, shelling, and scuba diving off Boca Grande. While city dwellers went for drives in the country, they always went out for a boat ride. It's just what you did back then. Hop in the boat and go exploring.

People dream of living on an island and wondering what it's like. We lived this life. I loved birds and there were two Red Hawks that I ended up training until they had lots of babies and I couldn't keep up with the demands of more birds.

There was no island theater then. We loved going to the beach and having bon fires with our friends. It was a great life!
