Growing Up on Sanibel features Rinn Newmeyer. This first of five Sanibel Island documentaries sponsored by Pfeifer Realty Group highlights four generations of people who grew up on Sanibel. The film will features some long–time Sanibel residents who either grew up here, or who moved here in their early adult years, and who raised families here. An additional focus to adults who grew up here takes a nostalgic look back at their experience growing up Sanibel Island. Finally, current “Sanibel kids” are featured, with glimpses into their island lives.
For 3 years in a row, Rinn was the top Windsurfer in America! In 1996 he coached the U.S. Olympic Windsurfing Team during the Atlanta Games. Rinn was 11 years old when his family moved to Sanibel Island with his 2 older sisters. His dad ran a hotel on the island. They helped with the hotel when they weren't in school or fishing. We loved playing on the beach with shells, collecting coconuts, and pool hopping from hotel to hotel.
He learned Windsurfing by accident when a guest brought one to the hotel and let Rinn try it out. Later he used a board owned by Bruce Cochraine who at the time ran the Snook Motel. Bruce thought him the principals of the wind and harnessing the power it provides. Rinn attended FSU Florida State University, and after 3 semesters he was told to pursue Windsurfing as a Career. After 12 years I was 6 years on the Windsurfing team as an athlete and won two bronze medals in the World Championships.
I loved Windsurfing off of the Sanibel Causeway. It's where I learned the sport. There is no where I would rather windsurf than off Sanibel Island.
