FUN FACT: Woodring Point is rich in Sanibel history. Sam B. and Anna Woodring were Sanibel homesteaders in 1888 and their family descendants still live on the point. Sam Woodring Sr. discovered Sanibel while serving in the Civil War. Their daughter Flora Sanibel Woodring Morris was born on Sanibel and married John Morris. Morris cultivated and grew Mangoes in the Iona area, and became a Lee County Commissioner. Sam and Anna's son Sam Woodring Jr. was an accomplished fishing guide, generous supporter of many island projects including the Sanibel Community House, and he was a major supplier of bootleg spirits during the prohibition era. Sam Jr. married Esperanza Woodring who was born on Cayo Costa (a small island north of Upper Captiva) in 1901. After Sam Jr. passed, Esperanza continued their fishing guide business into the 80's. Ralph Woodring, grandson of homesteader Sam Woodring Sr. still resides in the family homestead on Woodring Point. The point was acquired by the Ding Darling Wildlife Preserve in 2013, and the Woodring Family will reside there with a life lease.
