FUN FACT: On Sanibel, the name Periwinkle refers to the small 5 petal flowers which come in a variety of colors and grow naturally here on the islands. Periwinkle Way was named for the small flowers which surrounded the road when it was simply a dirt road connecting the lighthouse to Tarpon Bay Road. In the early days, Island pioneers traveled more by boat than by land and many of the dirt roads were named descriptively.
