The Sanibel Bridges were officially opened with an early morning 5K run, kayak races, and an old car parade! Once the ribbon was cut, the old cars were the first vehicles to cross the fully opened new bridge.
The new Sanibel Causeway is now the tallest bridge in Lee County. During the next few months there will be a great deal of landscaping added to the causeway islands. The new islands will be Lee County's newest park: Causeway Islands Park.
On a personal note, my wife and kids enjoyed participating in the grand opening 5 K run that morning. The best part of the run for my 9 year old son John was being the last walker to cross the finish line because he was having too much fun trying to do head stands on the top of the high span where the draw bridge use to be.
