Before the Causeway: Building Sanibel

After World War II, the nation’s economy expanded and visitors began to come to Sanibel and needed accommodations. Mom and Pop hotels began to appear as well as shops, real estate companies and restaurants. While island businesses and opportunities expanded so did the concern about responsible growth. Islanders saw what was becoming of Florida’s east coast and did not want that to happen here. During this time Sanibel became a winter tourist destination for shelling and fishing.
