Why are so many people moving to the Sunshine State?

Florida's warm climate, beautiful beaches, year-round outdoor activity, and absence of state income tax are reasons why people are still moving to Southwest Florida. In fact, according to the Florida Office of Economic and Demographic Research, more than 900 full-time residents moved to Florida every day from April 2020 to April 2021 and this trend is expected to increase. Christopher Westley, Director of Regional Economic Research Institute at FGCU (Florida Gulf Coast University) indicated in March 2017 that we should not expect this migration to Southwest Florida to slow down anytime soon as Baby Boomers sell their northern homes and retire to our area. According to the most recent 2015 - 2016 U.S. Census Lee County (Fort Myers, Ft. Myers Beach, Cape Coral, Estero, Sanibel & Captiva) was the fifth fastest-growing metro area between 2010 and 2014. In 2014 Florida passed New York's state population to become the third-largest state population and this figure continues to grow.
