Iona Area - South Fort Myers
LAST UPDATED: 01 December 2013

Iona Road and the Iona Area in South Fort Myers is a popular waterfront area for homes and neighborhoods due to its close proximity to the Caloosahatchee River, and boating access. Iona Road runs East of McGregor Boulevard following the southern edge of the river.

Historically this area was used by cowboys to drive cattle to Punta Rassa along the river. McGregor Boulevard (Historic State Road 867) use to be called Riverside Avenue before the name was changed to McGregor after Ambrose McGregor former Standard Oil Executive neighbor of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford.

The Iona area is rich in history. The Linton family (Linton Road) used their family home which was built sometime around 1910 as a bed and breakfast for the cattlemen when they arrived in Punta Rassa. Cattle were loaded onto boats headed for Cuba and the cowboys were often paid in gold coins which were so heavy that they required wooden boxes and wagons to get their payments home.
