FUN FACT: Completed in 1884, the Sanibel Lighthouse marked the first lighthouse on the West Coast of Florida heading north from Cuba. Punta Rassa's port was growing as trade expanded to Cuba. Fidel Castro's rise to power ended trade with the US and the construction of the Sanibel Causeway in 1963 ended Punta Rassa's days as a port of trade.
